“The haunting echo of the Northern Loon at Spruce River keeps us coming back”.
Charlotte and I discovered Spruce River a small campground several years ago and have been back a number of times. Spruce River campground is located in the Great Blue Heron Provincial Park 60 kms north of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada on the beautiful Anglin Lake.
We love this little campground (and probably should keep it a secret) as all the times we visited we could back into one of the campsites right on the river and were the only ones there. With only eight non-electric sites and close to the popular Anderson Point Campground with 60 electrical sites located on Anglin Lake and Anglin Lake North Campground with 10 non-electric sites, we find Spruce River many times vacant, “perfect”. One must check however if travelling from a distance as many times in prime time (mid June to late July) schools book the site for group camping. Also a great site to book if travelling with a number of people camping. greatblueheron@gov.sk.ca
The sites themselves are not really pretty compared to many groomed spots in the surrounding area campsites, but the setting on the River connecting to Anglin Lake is beautiful. An outdoor toilet which is kept very clean, fire pits and a log gazebo and firewood are really the only amenities offered. The Provincial Park amenities include picnic areas, beach, lodging at Land of the Loon Resort, a boat launch and filleting station. This scenic park is popular with hikers and canoeists and in the winter groomed cross country ski trails that connect to ski trails in Prince Albert National Park.
It is one of the great campgrounds we have found in Saskatchewan, it’s a great spot for fishing, canoeing and kayaking. If you are not an RV’er or camper one can still enjoy the park by staying at the Land of the Loon Resort. The resort has been owned by the Greening family for four generations now and is operated by Deb, her son Dylan and Tim Dodds. You can check them out here http://landoftheloonresort.com
